CH2M HILL Polar Services (CPS) may support scientists working in the Prudhoe Bay vicinity. Due to increased oilfield activity, any work in this area must be arranged and scheduled months in advance. Keep in mind that this community exists for the support of the oil industry.
CH2M HILL Alaska Region of Energy Services and Operations (ESO), formerly known as VECO Alaska,
an oilfield services company, works in this area. It is a separate but related company to CPS. For all science needs, please contact CPS. The following are services that CPS can provide, often with the help of ESO.
Lodging and services - Lodging in Deadhorse is primarily provided through ESO's Arctic Oilfield Hotel. Reservations must be made in advance, through CPS. This is a standard ATCO workcamp arrangement with simple rooms and a common shower. Smoking is allowed. Meals are buffet style - food is always available. In addition, there are laundry facilities.
There are several other workcamps in town that all feature identical amenities.
Shipping – The following mailing/shipping methods are generally available in Deadhorse:
- Federal Express packages can be shipped to Deadhorse, for pick-up at the local agent NAPA/Brooks Range Supply. They do not deliver, and you can't ship out.
- Alaska Airlines offers their gate-to-gate Goldstreak Service as well as several other options.
- UPS and DHL have had shipping options in Deadhorse but this should be verified at the time of shipping.
Shipping to ESO is an option for held items, or larger shipments. Carefully label it with your name and your arrival date, and to "hold for pickup." Notify CPS, Marin Kuizenga, of the number of items shipped, date, and anticipated arrival date. It is best to ship items so that they do not sit in the parts office for over one week.

Samples/Shipping – Alaska Airlines has a walk-in freezer that may be used for samples, with prior arrangement (AK Air cargo: 907-659-2688).
Trucks - Crew cabs with no topper are provided through ESO. These need to be reserved in advance through CPS. All trucks are now state licensed for road travel.
Fuel – Fuel is available at an automated Tesoro (will not accept Fleet cards) or at the Chevron Station run by Nana. Like all rental agencies, the vehicles are provided full of fuel and need to be returned with a full tank.
Road emergencies - ESO’s trucks are equipped with a spare tire, jacks and tire tools. You should confirm this prior to leaving. If emergency repairs are needed, call dispatch at 907-659-3313.
Ride from airport to ESO – It's a long walk. Call the office at 907-659-3359 or, after hours, dispatch at 659-3313.
Internet – Several of the hotels now have pay-as-you-go wireless Internet available.
Laundry and showers - The Arctic Oilfield Hotel allows researchers the use of laundry and shower facilities on a walk-in basis. Let the front desk know what you are doing and that you are billing this to CH2M HILL Polar Services.
Office – CPS may be able to arrange for office space, with prior notification.
Storage - CPS has a unit for cold storage of equipment located on Dalton Road. Check with the CPS Fairbanks office for bay assignments and combinations.
Oilfields - All those intending to work on the fields must contact BP for authorization and badging. CPS can assist with the costs of training including the North Slope Training Co-operative Unescorted class (9-10 hour class). For more information visit our Oilfield Training page.
- Guns - Guns for bear protection may be taken on the oilfields however you do need to contact BP security in advance to have it registered. Call BP dispatch at 907-659-5631.
