Science Summary:
This grant funds continued observations of turbulent fluxes, heat content, and current profiles in the ocean boundary layer below sea ice in the Beaufort Sea and Transpolar Drift regions of the Arctic Ocean. A series of ice-deployed Autonomous Ocean Flux Buoys (AOFB) will robustly measure heat, salt and momentum fluxes near the ocean-ice interface using direct, eddy-correlation techniques. Significant scientific and logistic leverage results from collaboratively deploying the AOFBs on the same ice floes as systems concurrently measuring the ocean temperature and salinity structure, the conductive fluxes through the ice cover, and at some stations, the bulk atmospheric and radiative fluxes, all of which are components of the Arctic Observing Network.

Logistics Summary:
This project continues observations of turbulent fluxes, heat content, and current profiles in the ocean-boundary layer below sea ice begun under Stanton's "IPY: Toward developing an Arctic Observing Network: An array of surface buoys to sample turbulent ocean heat and salt fluxes during the IPY" project (0632041 in this database). Using logistics support in place for other research efforts, the PI will continue to make under-ice boundary layer observations in the Beaufort Sea and Transpolar Drift regions of the Arctic Ocean. Beginning in 2010, the PI will deploy one buoy per year at the North Pole Environmental Observatory during the spring research effort. Support details for the deployment will be carried under the main NPEO grant, 0856330 (Morison). Additionally, R. Krishfield (WHOI, 0634226) will deploy two buoys in the Beaufort Gyre per year, using available ship time to accomplish the work.. Under supplement #1451109, work will continue in 2015 and new buoys deployed. One of these buoys will be deployed during the NABOS cruise, while the others will be positioned with an ITP as part of the NPEO project in April 2015, and in the northern Beaufort Sea in the 2015 summer.
