Science Summary:
Recent changes, including the dramatic speedups of several large outlet glaciers, and increased rates of surface melting, have increased Greenland’s contribution to sealevel rise from near zero in the 1990s to a large negative imbalance today. Poor knowledge of the processes driving these changes is one of the main limitations on prediction of future ice sheet contributions to sea level rise. An increasing number of observations point towards the influence of coupled ocean-ice-atmospheric processes in modulating ice sheet mass balance and outlet glacier behavior, but most studies are limited to the past few decades restricting our ability to extrapolate these relationships over longer time periods, given their high inter-annual variability. This project will further the understanding of ocean-ice-atmosphere interaction around the Jakobshavn Isbrae and Disko Bay region of west Greenland, with a particular focus on the role of sea surface temperature and sea ice variability in modulating past outlet glacier behavior and ice sheet/cap mass balance (snowfall and melt) over the past two centuries.

Logistics Summary:
This collaborative effort between Das (1205196, WHOI), Evans (1205008, Wheaton), Frey (1205018, Clark U), and Smith (1205062, UW) will study ocean-ice-atmosphere interaction around the Jakobshavn Isbrae and Disko Bay region of west Greenland, with a particular focus on the role of sea surface temperature and sea ice variability in modulating past outlet glacier behavior and ice sheet/cap mass balance (snowfall and melt) over the past two centuries. Two field seasons, in 2014 and 2015, will enable the research. Researchers will reconstruct past environmental conditions in the Disko Bugt region using remote sensing, geophysical surveys, and new glacio-chemical and physical stratigraphic records from snow pits, firn and ice cores from three sites surrounding Disko Bay. These primary field activities will take place in 2014 and will be conducted by a field team of 6 that include: site reconnaissance, radar surveys, and shallow snow and firn sampling on the western margin of the Greenland ice sheet and on ice caps on Disko Island and Nuussuaq Peninsula. Main ice-coring activity will follow in 2015 at all 3 sites where researchers plan to collect ~100-m deep ice-cores. Field activities will be followed by extensive lab and computational work to derive climate reconstructions from these cores.

CPS will provide Air National Guard coordination for pax and freight, KISS user days, lodging in Qaarsut, freight and transport between Kangerlussuaq & Qaarsut, fixed-wing and helicopter charters to the sites, freezer storage in Qaarsut and Kangerlussuaq, procurement of ice core boxes, core tubes, eutectics, etc. as well as the subsequent shipping of cores from field to NICL, a glacier training course, and camp & safety gear. UNAVCO will provide technical equipment and services. IDDO will provide drilling equipment and support. The researchers will arrange/pay for all other support through the grant.
